When young, we look to the sky and see shapes in clouds. We watch as the cloud reshapes into something else. Like actual clouds, the world of digital cloud-based tools seems to also be ever changing as this new technology is developed. For librarians, trend of moving ILS systems to the cloud has exciting possibilities but enthusiasm is tempered by uncertainty. Cloud-based web services are a somewhat new tool, and as such, options are limited. These services are being continuously upgraded, and librarians need to have a voice in the development of these tools to be sure their needs are met.
Libraries have needs that are complex and evolving and available ILS systems are presently limited in their abilities. Minimally, an ILS system will track what the library owns, its patrons, what they have borrowed, and other general library services. These minimal functions do not take into account the need for integration with the wider array of online services libraries offer nor integration into services of the libraries’ academic institution.
This webinar will discuss what capabilities libraries need versus the capabilities currently offered in commercial ILS systems, and possible short-term solutions as well as helping ILS cloud services to understand better what future versions of their products should include.

Utilizing the Cloud to Empower Research Efforts

As the volume and diversity of content explodes, libraries struggle to provide researchers access and support discoverability of this rapidly growing body of information, which is increasingly comprised of electronic resources. Unlike older technological systems based on inventory and management of print resources, the cloud provides improved economies of scale to manage a variety of content types. With modern researchers increasingly collaborating on interdisciplinary research across locations, cloud-based systems better serve a broader and more diverse group of researchers and also offer improved access to near real-time resources. Next generation cloud-based ILS supporting management of print & electronic resources across the entire collection help libraries further improve the research experience, whether inside the library or in other locations.
Migrating CDL Infrastructure to Amazon Web Services

Starting in 2014, CDL has been working through a project to migrate their entire technology infrastructure to Amazon Web Services. This project is well under way and we currently have 115 EC2 instances, 51 RDS (MySQL) instances, 358 EBS volumes, 7 load balancers, and 40 S3 buckets actively used by our services. We support Development, Stage, and Production environments within our AWS infrastructure, and are currently working in a hybrid mode with some services and functions still running in our local data centers while we complete our migration efforts. This presentation will be an overview of why we decided to move to a cloud provider, what benefits we have seen to date, and where we see ourselves going in the future.
Surveying the Horizon: Preservation and the Cloud

Preserving digital information is becoming an ever more important role of libraries and archives in our digital society. Cloud computing and, more specifically, cloud-based data storage offers some potential to help address the issues information professionals face. Yet, not everyone agrees that cloud computing is the best solution. By examining the problem, reviewing the literature, and assessing best practices, it is possible to understand some of the issues that need to be considered.

Audio is available through the computer (broadcast) and by telephone. We recommend you have a set-up for telephone audio as back-up even if you plan to use the broadcast audio as the voice over Internet isn't always 100% reliable.
