NISO Offers Robust Calendar of Events in 2019
Subscription Packages Maximize the Value of Training Dollars
The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) is pleased to announce its calendar of professional development programs scheduled for 2019. The NISO Education Committee, with input from the NISO membership, has pulled together a roster of highly relevant topics of interest to all sectors of the information community. Members and non-members alike will benefit from participating in this full roster of webinars, virtual conferences, and training series.
For those interested in maximizing their training dollars, subscription options are available. For webinars, NISO offers the Buy 9, Get 5 Free package that will ensure access to all 14 of the scheduled 90-minute webinars. Alternatively, NISO offers a more limited, customizable Buy 5, Get 4 Free package; subscribers select just nine webinars to satisfy their professional development needs. Similarly, those wishing to pay for the full set of virtual conferences being offered in 2019 may do by subscribing to the Buy 3, Get 3 Free package.
In 2019, NISO’s annual series of 90-minute webinars – fourteen in all – will offer discussions of the following:
- Enabling Discovery: Publishers & Libraries Talk Metadata & Monographs (Two-Part Webinar)
- Wrestling with Access and Authentication Control
- Defining The Library: The Mission, Role and Community
- The Power of Library Consortia: How Publishers and Libraries Can Successfully Negotiate
- Libraries and The Move to Transparency
- Discovery and Online Search: The Impact on Users, Libraries and Service Providers (Two-Part Webinar)
- Open Source Publishing Technologies: Current Status and Emerging Possibilities
- Preservation and Archiving of Digital Media
- Value-Add to Cataloging: Efficiency and Effectiveness Revisited
- Implementing Linked Library Data
- Where Does It Live? Storing Collections On and Off Campus (Two-Part Webinar)
In response to feedback from event attendees, beginning in 2019, all NISO Virtual Conferences will be 4 hours in length, beginning at 12:00 Noon and ending at 4:00pm (Eastern). While shorter in duration (in order to more readily fit into a busy professional’s workflow), these six events will feature expert speakers examining the following:
- Is This Still Working? Incentives to Publish, Metrics, and New Reward Systems
- Includes a Training Thursday, Presenting Metrics for Better Understanding and Use
- Long Form Content: E-books, Print Volumes and the Concerns of Those Who Use Both
- Includes a Training Thursday, Thinking about New Usage Metrics for Books
- Blurred Boundaries: Intellectual Property and Networked Sharing of Content
- From Submission to Publication: Creating and Conveying Quality
- Includes a Training Thursday, Managing Peer Review
- Sustaining Openness: Ensuring the Long Term Viability of Open Science, OER and More
- The Impact of the Interface: Traditional and Non Traditional Content
"These programs reflect the concerns of the full constituency of NISO’s cross-sector membership. To efficiently deliver information at the point of need in a busy professional’s workflow, it’s critical to understand the rationale for and engage with other stakeholders’ systems and services. It’s beneficial to hear multiple perspectives from a spectrum of expert voices," says Todd Carpenter, Executive Director, NISO. "In 2018, NISO educational events encouraged attendees to consider new practices, products, and services. In 2019, the programs encourage attendees to adapt further to innovative changes in the creation and dissemination of scholarship."
Organizations pay a single fee to enable viewing access for multiple team members in a collaborative group setting. (Note that webinar registration is priced per site, assuming group viewing via use of a single computer.) Webinar registrants hold access to the recorded version for a full year, allowing even greater opportunity for staff to benefit from that single registration.
