NISO Congratulates Alice Meadows on Her Election as President of SSP

The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) congratulates Alice Meadows, their Director of Community Engagement, on her election as President of the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP). Alice’s three-year commitment to the industry leadership role begins as President Elect on June 1, 2020.

“All of the NISO staff are pleased that Alice has been recognized in this way by industry colleagues,” said Todd Carpenter, Executive Director of NISO. “We know the depth of her understanding of how the research information ecosystem operates. We’ve seen her deftness in engaging with a wide range of professionals, including the diverse set of scholarship winners who attended our NISO Plus conference. She’ll accomplish great things as an elected officer of SSP!”

The Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP), founded in 1978, is a nonprofit organization formed to promote and advance communication among all sectors of the scholarly publication community through networking, information dissemination, and facilitation of new developments in the field. SSP members represent all aspects of scholarly publishing—including publishers, printers, e-products developers, technical service providers, librarians, and editors.

Alice joined NISO in 2019, after several years as Director of Communications and Director of Community Engagement Support at ORCID, a nonprofit organization that provides researchers with a unique persistent identifier that can be used to connect them reliably with their outputs and affiliations. Before that, Alice held a number of similar roles with content providers, including Blackwell Publishing and Wiley.

An active participant in industry organizations and initiatives, including SSP, The Association of Learned & Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP), Metadata 2020, PIDapalooza, and others, Alice is also a regular contributor to The Scholarly Kitchen blog and other scholarly communications publications, and speaks at numerous industry conferences and events. Alice received the SSP Distinguished Service Award in 2018, the ALPSP Award for Contribution to Scholarly Publishing in 2016, and the International Society of Managing and Technical Editors Recognition Award in 2013.

“I’m greatly honored to be elected President of SSP,” Alice said. “It’s been my professional ‘home’ for over a decade, and I am looking forward to working collaboratively with my fellow Board members, the SSP staff, and our members to build on the society’s strong foundations and further expand our community, in order to help ensure our organization’s future success.”
