Information Community News

Dateline: December 18, 2020

FORCE11 (The Future of Research Communication and eScholarship) has announced new members to join its governing board in January. Individuals from five countries will help the FORCE11 membership adapt and respond to emerging issues in scholarly communication and maintain the momentum toward open research.

FORCE11 is a cross-sector member organisation representing academic institutions and scholars, publishers, infrastructure providers, research funders and other stakeholders dedicated to changing modern scholarly communication through the effective use of information technology. FORCE11 members work individually and collectively to develop solutions that improve knowledge creation and sharing.

Incoming board members have expressed commitments to helping FORCE11 maintain strong connections between content creators, curators and preservationists; expand the globalisation of our focus and serve as a hub for the worldwide community; keep up pressure on opening research practices; and accelerate our realisation of a more efficient, effective and inclusive future for scholarly communication.

Joining the governing board for three-year terms beginning in 2021 are:

  • Todd Carpenter - NISO: National Information Standards Organisation (USA)

  • Emma Ganley - protocols.io (UK)

  • Danny Kingsley - Australian National Centre for the Public Awareness of Science (AUS)

  • Heather Piwowar - Our Research (CAN)

  • Mantra Roy - San Jose State University (USA)

  • Natasha Simons - Australian Research Data Commons (AUS)

  • Jesse Xiao - University of Hong Kong (CN)

“The nominations this year were extraordinarily strong, and we’re so grateful to all the members who put themselves forward for election,” says Violeta Ilik, FORCE11 Co-chair and Dean of Libraries at Adelphi University (USA). “The membership has had its say. With their expertise in information standards, infrastructure, protocols and data, equity in access, and so much more, our new board members will help FORCE11 to take on the challenges of our changing world.”

New members join FORCE11’s current board, which includes Mandy Taha, Stephanie Hagstrom, Osman Aldirdiri, Martin Brennan, Gimena del Rio Riande, Miho Funamori, Simon Worthington, John Chodacki (Co-chair), and Violeta Ilik (Co-chair).

Departing from the board this month are Jennifer Gibson (2018-2020), Bianca Kramer (2018-2020), Euan Adie (2018-2020), Leslie Chan (2015-2020), and Daniel O’Donnell (2014-2020).

“On behalf of the Board of Directors and membership I want to extend our deep thanks to each of the outgoing members this year,” says John Chodacki, FORCE11 Co-chair and Director of the University of California Curation Center. “Their unique perspectives and extensive experience in scholarly communication have been a boon to FORCE11 and we’re so grateful they shared those with us. They have also contributed countless hours of their time, which have been key to the successes of the annual meeting, scholarly communication institute, and working groups. We’d like to thank Dan O’Donnell in particular for his long commitment to FORCE11 and his leadership as Vice-President and President, from 2014 to 2019.”
