NISO Staff News

The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) is pleased to announce several staff changes. Lisa Jackson today joins NISO as Office Manager, replacing Kimberly Graham, who recently moved into the new role of Education Program Manager and DEIA Advocate, as previously announced. Alice Meadows, Director of Community Engagement, is leaving NISO on January 4, 2023, and will be replaced by Mary Beth Barilla, who will join the same day as Director of Business Development and Communications.

Lisa joins NISO from the Washington, DC office of Consumer Reports, where she had been Office Manager and Advocacy Team Operations Lead since 2018. A native Washingtonian who has recently moved to Baltimore, Lisa is a graduate of both the University of DC and Georgetown University, with nearly 20 years of office management experience, project management expertise, and systems management work. Lisa’s responsibilities at NISO will include accounting, operations, and systems work, as well as support for the Board and staff.

Alice came to NISO from ORCID, following the merger with NFAIS in 2019. Since then she has helped ensure that the two overlapping, but somewhat different, communities remained engaged and active, while also working to increase engagement with NISO’s work more generally. Alice has played a critical role in supporting NISO’s strategic objective to increase diversity and inclusion, including launching and running the NISO Plus Scholarship program, acting as staff point person for the DEIA committee, and working to expand global engagement in our events, including the NISO Plus conference. During Alice’s three years with the organization, NISO membership has almost doubled — from fewer than 200 members in 2019 to about 380 in 2022, including consortia arrangements with the Canadian Research Knowledge Network (2021) and PALCI (2022). After taking a short break, Alice will be expanding her involvement with the MoreBrains Cooperative, a scholarly communications consultancy that she co-founded in 2021.

Mary Beth joins NISO from the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP), where she currently serves as Program Manager, managing their membership educational program. Her previous positions include Publisher Relations Manager at RedLink, and sales management roles at both commercial publishers and university presses.  She brings to NISO significant experience of sales, business development, marketing, and publisher relations.

Todd Carpenter, NISO’s Executive Director, said, “We are sad to be saying goodbye to Alice, and yet grateful to her for her many contributions. Simultaneously, we are delighted to welcome both Lisa and Mary Beth to NISO. Each brings valuable experience that will help ensure our organization’s smooth operations and sustainability as we look to the future.”
