Will you be with us in San Diego for the American Library Association 2024 Annual Meeting? The NISO organization invites you to participate in a variety of sessions as all sectors wrestle with the practicalities of delivering innovative services in an increasingly complex landscape.
The 17th Annual NISO/BISG Forum addresses the Changing Standards Landscape of AI in Book Publishing, exploring the significant opportunities and existential threats that artificial intelligence poses for the book publishing industry. Together, publishers and libraries collaborate in delivering books to readers, regardless of requested format or platform environment. How might artificial intelligence further affect existing workflows and systems? This year’s program features input from such book industry professionals as Director of Johns Hopkins University Press, Barbara K. Hope, author Robin Sloan, Rachel Comerford of Macmillan Learning, and consultant Thad McIlroy. The event takes place on Friday, June 28 from 12:00–4:00 pm and is open to all registered attendees of the ALA 2024 meeting. (See our ALA 2024 events page for ongoing updates to this program.)
Throughout ALA, NISO leadership and some of our many Working Group volunteers will update attendees on collaborative community efforts toward smoother workflows and outcomes.
What has emerged from efforts by the NISO Working Group on Interoperable System for Controlled Digital Lending (IS-CDL)? Nettie Lagace, Associate Executive Director at NISO, will provide an overview, update, and discussion opportunity. Squeeze that into your schedule on Saturday, June 29 (10:30–11:30 am)
On Saturday afternoon (3:00–4:00 pm), Todd Carpenter will provide an update on the Collaborative Collections Lifecycle Project (CCLP). An IMLS-funded initiative, the CCLP project is intended to aid libraries in getting past some of the practical barriers to expanded collective resource-sharing through the creation of a suite of best practices, improved standards, and middleware for the development and management of collective collections.
Another long-standing program element of ALA is our annual NISO Standards Update (Sunday, June 30, 1:00– 2:00 pm). Moderator Nettie Lagace will engage with Working Group members as they provide updates on projects newly underway or recently completed. It’s a whirlwind tour, but there will be time for questions!
Also on that Sunday (10:30–11:30 am), NISO leadership will take you through the Communication of Retractions, Removals, and Expressions of Concern (CREC) Recommended Practice, an effort to improve communication in the supply chain around retractions and contribute to the maintenance of trust in the research and publication process.
Finally, on Monday, July 1, NISO’s Director of Strategic Initiatives, Jason Griffey, will provide an update on the SeamlessAccess Project. The goal is helping users navigate swiftly and easily to the needed resource. What’s next on the roadmap?
