Let's Talk about AI without the Sci-Fi at NISO Plus

February 2026
Brandie Nonnecke, PhD, Senior Director of Policy, Americans for Responsible Innovation

No matter where you look, AI is in the news in scholarly communications, and commentary both practical as well as philosophical abounds. As many of us grapple with assessing new tools and developing AI policies for our organizations, predictions about the long-term impact of AI on the industry vary widely, ranging from dire warnings about the dangers of the new technology to rhapsodies about its promise. That’s why we’re so eager to hear Brandie Nonnecke, Senior Director of Policy at Americans for Responsible Innovation, deliver the opening keynote at this month’s NISO Plus conference in Baltimore.

In her talk, entitled “AI without the Sci-Fi: Separating Myth from Reality for Meaningful Impact,” Nonnecke will cut through the noise to explain what AI actually is, what it is not, and why this distinction matters for responsibly harnessing its potential. She will examine the evolving legal and policy landscape, highlight core ethical considerations, and outline practical best practices for responsible use. With a focus on privacy, transparency, and accountability, the session will equip information professionals to engage confidently with AI, advocate for sound policy, and ensure these technologies advance libraries’ mission of equitable access to information and public trust.

Nonnecke is an expert on technology policy and a frequent speaker on this topic. She was also the host of TecHype, a groundbreaking video and podcast series about emerging technologies, so we’re looking forward to an entertaining as well as informative look at the innovations transforming our work. Her talk is scheduled for the morning of Tuesday, February 17, and there’s still time to join us in Baltimore—see our event site for more information on the conference program and to register.
