Assessment Metrics

Webinar

About the Webinar

With ever-shrinking library budgets it is more essential than ever to ensure that the library collection is targeted, relevant and well-used. Return on Investment (ROI) has become the mantra of library management and libraries need to show accountability for collection decisions. This webinar will focus on speakers who have successfully implemented assessment metrics (such as COUNTER 3, Eigenfactor and impact factors) as one determining factor of collection development decisions.

Introduction

Speaker

COUNTER and SUSHI: What’s new with release 4 of the COUNTER Code of Practice

Speaker

Oliver Pesch

Chief Product Strategist
EBSCO Information Services

The original goals of the COUNTER Code of Practice and the NISO SUSHI Standard were to provide librarians with collection usage metrics that ware compatible, consistent and comparable and make those metrics easier to obtain. Release 4 of the COUNTER Code of Practice includes significant changes which both further the original goals of the code of practice and addresses the changing environment within which users access content. Oliver will provide an overview of the changes to the COUNTER Code of Practice as well as provide some insights into additional efforts of the NISO SUSHI Standing Committee which promise to speed adoption of SUSHI and ensure consistency in COUNTER reports.

The options to evaluate journal ranking have greatly increased in the past six years. Robin will provide an overview of currently available journal metrics, including the well-known impact factor and relative newcomers Eigenfactor score, Article Influence, SJR (SCImago Journal Rank), and SNIP (Source Normalized Impact per Paper) , the differences between them, and ways to use these metrics for collection development. She will also discuss the various subscription-based and freely available ways to access the metrics.

Using Journal Metrics for Decision-Making

Speakers

Corey Murata

Information Resources and Collection Assessment Librarian, University of Washington
University of Washington

The University of Washington Libraries has long gathered and provided journal payment and usage statistics to its subject librarians and fund managers, but the prospect of major budget cuts led to development of a serials decision database capable of incorporating and reporting additional metrics like journal impact factor, eigenfactor, and local journal article publishing and citation statistics. This presentation will describe the broader collection assessment program of which this project is a part, the database and its application to e-journal title and package/bundle-level assessment, and future plans.
