IOP Publishing Extends Unlimited OA Offering In The US

NISO Member News

In support of the transition toward open access (OA), IOP Publishing (IOPP) has agreed five more unlimited OA publishing agreements with research institutions in the United States (US). The read and publish agreements will enable the University of Florida, North Carolina State University, Rowan University, Mount Holyoke College and Olin College of Engineering to publish unlimited research articles in all IOPP journals and almost all of IOPP’s partner journals at no cost to their affiliated authors.

These transformative agreements (TAs) also offer researchers and students from the five institutions reading access to IOPP journals and most partner journals. From January 2023, authors publishing under the agreement will be able to do so whilst retaining their copyright.

Erin Gallagher, Chair, Acquisitions & Collections Services at the University of Florida, said: “Our OA agreement with IOPP is an exciting opportunity to bolster our commitment to making our research accessible to the global community immediately after publication while our faculty researchers get the chance to publish their research OA without having to pay Article Processing Charges.”

Callan Bignoli, Library Director at Olin College of Engineering, said: “Our library is trying to pursue as many open access-friendly deals as we can at a time when it’s more important than ever to provide global access to high-quality research. We encourage other publishers to offer similar arrangements so we can change the world of scholarly publishing for the better.”

Hilary Davis, Department Head, Collections & Research Strategy at North Carolina State University said: “The IOPP agreement will be an excellent benefit for us. Through this agreement, the North Carolina State University Libraries will continue to provide access to all IOPP journals while also covering the fees needed to publish open access with them. Therefore, our researchers can publish their articles as open access in IOPP journals without having to pay the open access fees, increasing discoverability and readership of our scholarship.”

Julian Wilson, Sales and Marketing Director at IOPP said: “The future of publishing is Open and we are excited to work with a growing number of North American institutions that choose to deliver unlimited OA publishing through our TAs. Having become commonplace in Europe, we now see the adoption of OA publishing through TAs becoming more established in North America too. We are keen to support this evolution by continuing to explore how we can offer other institutions a sustainable route to unlimited OA publishing as part of new agreements with IOPP.”

The five American transformative ‘read and publish’ licences are the most recent in a series of similar agreements that IOPP has secured with research institutions and consortia around the world. IOPP now has TAs with more than 290 institutions in 16 countries.
