Quick Glimpse At the Details

The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) has announced their strategic plan for October 2023–2026.

The strategic planning process is led by NISO’s Board of Directors, working with the Executive Director and staff. The updated plan, developed by an ad hoc Strategic Planning Committee led by Board member Jonathan Clark, builds on the success NISO has seen following its 2019 merger with the National Federation of Advanced Information Services. The plan takes into account NISO’s expanded membership and the growth of the NISO Plus conference and positions the organization to aggressively and sustainably pursue new objectives and goals. As part of the planning process, the Committee renewed their commitment to NISO’s mission and vision statement and established a new set of values.

NISO’s mission remains focused on the development of authoritative standards. Its vision is a world where all benefit from the unfettered exchange of information—a world in which all parties involved with content creation and dissemination collaborate to build and support an infrastructure allowing access to everyone. Through engaging with the diversity of the community, NISO will produce the best solutions for the widest possible impact.

To complement this mission and vision, the Board has added a new set of underlying values:

  • NISO seeks consensus among participants in their work and strives for outputs that serve a worldwide community.
  • NISO is committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in everything they do.
  • NISO equally values the contributions of all voices in their processes.

The NISO Board also revised their approach to their strategic objectives and identified the following areas for NISO to focus on over the next three years:

  • Community: NISO nurtures an engaged, inclusive, and sustainable community. NISO is recognized for connecting diverse stakeholders and inspiring collaboration among them.
  • Leadership: NISO builds knowledge through leadership and innovation in improving efficiency in the information community. NISO is recognized for its expertise and considered an exemplar for standards development for information management.
  • Growth: NISO grows meaningfully and expands its standards work and services portfolio in areas of highest demand and the greatest potential for expanding their resources. NISO is recognized for actively seeking new opportunities.

Under each of these themes, the NISO Board adopted a specific set of objectives, with related activities and key performance indicators to help track progress. As well as reporting back to the Board on their activities, NISO will also share regular updates in their Information Organized (I/O) newsletter and at their annual members meeting.

"We are excited to unveil NISO's new strategic plan, emphasizing our commitment to community, leadership, and growth,” said Karim Boughida, NISO Board Chair. “We aim to nurture an engaged and inclusive community, lead through innovation, and grow strategically. Anticipate remarkable strides for NISO and all those we serve!"
