IOP Publishing launches series of open access journals dedicated to machine learning and artificial intelligence for the sciences

IOP Publishing (IOPP) is launching the world’s first series of open access journals dedicated to the application and development of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) for the sciences. The new multidisciplinary Machine Learning series will collectively cover applications of ML and AI across the physical sciences, engineering, biomedicine and health, and environmental and earth science. 

Building on the successful launch of Machine Learning: Science and Technology in 2019 IOPP’s Machine Learning series will expand to include three new journals: Machine Learning: HealthMachine Learning: Earth, and Machine Learning: EngineeringThe new journals will open for submissions later this year. In addition to research articles and reviews the series will also uniquely publish dataset, benchmark and challenge articles to meet the diverse needs of research communities working at the interface of ML, AI and the sciences.

Campus-wide ORCID Pilot Project Launches

Key stakeholders, including the Library, the Office of Research, and representatives that participate in a Bibliometrics Working Group (BWG), have come together to support the implementation of Open Researcher and Contributor Identifiers (ORCID) across the University, starting with a two-year pilot project to explore how a campus-wide approach could support researchers.

ORCID is a persistent identifier (PI) that points to an individual researcher, similar to the digital object identifiers (DOI) that are assigned by a publisher when an article is made available electronically.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Joins PALCI, Becomes 78th Member Library

The Partnership for Academic Library Collaboration and Innovation (PALCI) is delighted to announce that the Libraries at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, NY, an institution long-heralded for its legacy in change-making, especially in scientific and technological advancements, has joined the consortium’s membership effective July 1. RPI became the 78th member of PALCI, alongside Le Moyne College, another new PALCI member library from the upstate New York region.

With this membership, students, faculty, and researchers at RPI will gain access to and benefit from PALCI’s extensive resource-sharing network, which includes academic and research libraries in New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Through PALCI’s shared catalog and EZBorrow service, patrons of the Libraries at RPI will have access to a vast collection of over 46 million items shared by member institutions. PALCI’s strategic licensing programs will offer significant savings on electronic library materials, including eBooks, eJournals, and primary sources, through innovative licensing terms negotiated collaboratively with publishers and vendors.

CRKN and University of Alberta Library add select volumes of Irish University Press Series of British Parliamentary Papers to Canadiana

The Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN) and the University of Alberta Library have collaborated to add 36 volumes of the Irish University Press Series of British Parliamentary Papers to Canadiana. These volumes, comprising the “Colonies, Canada” and “Colonies, Canadian boundary” series, were selected based on their relevance to Canadian history, and cover topics related to Great Britain’s administration of Canada from 1802-1899. Digitization was completed by CRKN from volumes held at the University of Alberta Library, with one additional volume generously lent by the University of Ottawa Library.

The Irish University Press Series of British Parliamentary Papers was published between 1968-71 and comprises 1,000 volumes in total. The University of Alberta Library is one of the few known institutions to hold the entire collection, which contains invaluable information about British colonization and the administration of the British Empire in the 19th century. The “Colonies: Canada” and “Colonies: Canadian Boundary” volumes from the collection are regularly used by researchers and faculty at the University of Alberta, and will now be available to researchers globally through their availability on Canadiana.

Clarivate to Partner with OhioLINK and SearchOhio to Create a New Unified Library Experience Across the State of Ohio

Clarivate Plc (NYSE:CLVT), a leading global provider of transformative intelligence, today announced a partnership with OhioLINK, Ohio’s academic library consortium, and SearchOhio, a consortium of Ohio public libraries, to develop a new library resource sharing consortial experience.

Through this partnership Clarivate will unify OhioLINK and SearchOhio’s resource sharing platforms to enhance library user experiences and services, improve operational efficiencies and build upon existing consortia collaboration. The new solution is expected to be implemented by mid-year in 2025.

UNT Libraries releases the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy Collection

The University of North Texas Libraries is excited to release the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy Collection in the UNT Digital Library. This collection features over 120 resources about the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) toward government, legislative and procedural policy. We expect this collection to grow over the upcoming year with new publications being added as they are identified and collected.

Items in this collection are published by city and state governments, international government agencies, federal agencies, non-governmental agencies, and private research institutes. Users of the collection can expect resources that include official government reports, suggested policy implementation frameworks, proposed procedural guidelines and summarized research pertaining to AI and ML implementation. Included in the reports are updates of original findings from previous years, allowing users to follow the progression of an agency’s goals concerning the implementation of AI policy over time.

Atla Awarded Lilly Endowment Grant for Discovery Platform Serving the Study of Religion and Theology Worldwide

Atla has been awarded an $800,000 grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. to develop a federated search solution for supporting research, teaching, and ministry.

The first of its kind for theological education, this centralized hub will be an open discovery platform that cross-searches a wide range of materials, including a significant number of open access resources, special archives and collections, and institutional histories. It will be designed to serve and support theological education, interdisciplinary research in religion, preaching, and teaching. It is intended especially to make discoverable the at-risk and underrepresented collections and histories held by libraries, archives, organizations, and communities that fully reflect the diversity of contributions in religion and theology in society.
