Clarivate's Institute for Scientific Information has released a new report entitled "Research Collaboration in a Changing World." Based on data from Clarivate's Web of Science and InCites analytics tools, it highlights several trends in how researchers are collaborating around the world:

  • Multilateral collaboration (i.e., collaboration across three or more countries) is on the rise around the world and has surpassed bilateral collaboration. It is highest in western Europe.
  • Mainland China's research output continues to grow and has surpassed publication levels in the US.
  • Collaboration continues to play an important role in US research, but new federal policies and cuts in funding "risk isolating the US and weakening its global influence."

The report highlights that research based on multilateral collaboration tends to have greater impact, as evidenced by a higher number of citations, and emphasizes that institutions, funders, and policymakers should develop policies that support international collaboration.
