ArXiv to Become an Independent Nonprofit Organization

The preprint server arXiv will become an independent organization on July 1, 2026. Developed by physicist Paul Ginsparg and launched in 1991, it has been hosted by Cornell University since 2001. Cornell and the Simon Foundation, which has also supported arXiv, is currently conducting an international search for a CEO and recruit a board of directors to lead the organization.
A statement on Cornell's website outlines the reasons underlying the move and assures researchers that the organization's mission will remind the same:
This transition allows for faster technological development, greater organizational flexibility, expanded partnerships, and long-term financial sustainability. A platform built by scientists for scientists, the new arXiv will continue to serve researchers worldwide with the same dedication to free and open scientific discovery.
