STM Releases Consultation Brief on Responsible Use of Generative AI

The International Association of Scientific, Technical & Medical Publishers (STM) has released a consultation brief, Toward Responsible Use of Research Content in Generative AI, inviting all stakeholders, including developers of generative AI tools, to review the document and offer feedback. 

Recognizing the benefits of using generative AI tools for research, the brief also highlights the risks to research if such tools are not designed to preserve research integrity and recognize intellectual property rights. It outlines considerations for both developers and researchers using generative AI, such as including retractions in content display and prioritizing the version of record. It also identifies four key areas in which generative AI should support the integrity of the scholarly record: content coverage and display, attribution and citation, transparency and accountability, and research and quality. 

The brief invites discussion and emphasizes the importance of stakeholder collaboration in ensuring generative AI tools for research are used responsibly:

By working together, we can minimize risks, build
enduring trust within the scholarly community,
shape effective and balanced regulatory
landscapes, and, ultimately, contribute to the
proposition that GenAI tools accelerate scientific
discovery in a responsible, ethical, trustworthy,
and universally beneficial manner.
