Neil is the founding Director of the Software Sustainability Institute, representing the Institute and UK researchers at a national and international level. His current research is in barriers and incentives in research software ecosystems and the role of software as a research object. He sits on several related advisory boards, including the EPSRC e-Infrastructure Strategic Advisory Team (Chair); Computational Science Centre for Research Communities Steering Committee; The Carpentries Advisory Council (past chair); SESC / CCPForge Advisory Board; and TrustedCI Advisory Committee. He is the co-author of Best Practices in Scientific Computing and An Open Science Peer Review Oath, co-editor of Software Engineering for Science, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Open Research Software, member of the OECD GSF Expert Group on Digital Skills for Data-Intensive Science, member of the EOSC FAIR WG, co-chair of the FORCE11 Software Citation Implementation working group, and co-chair of the RDA Software Source Code interest group.
