How journals can survive and thrive in an age of innovation and disruption

October 2024

Closing, NISO Plus Global Online 2024

The 2024 NISO Plus Global/Online conference closed on September 18 with an inspiring keynote address from Ginny Barbour, Editor in Chief of the Medical Journal of Australia (MJA) and Adjunct Professor at Queensland University of Technology. In her talk, entitled “How journals can survive and thrive in an age of innovation and disruption,” she details six points to keep in mind when thinking about what journals must do to remain relevant in today’s environment. Perhaps her most compelling argument is that academic journals not only can but should use their influence to advocate for public health and social justice in their respective communities. Along the way, she offers several examples of how journals have successfully driven social change, among them initiatives at the MJA to support Indigenous health researchers.
